Become Like Emma Frost

Become Like Emma Frost

Emma Frost is part of the X-Men, a mutant with telepathic abilities. She can broadcast and receive thoughts and even alter perceptions and memories. There are more skills that Emma possesses, and you can read about them here -> Marvel Wikia However, we are only going to focus on these four. What if I told you that obtaining these four abilities and becoming like Emma Frost was as easy as picking up a novel and reading its content? Let me explain:

Receiving Thought and Broadcasting Thought

This isn't as strange as it sounds. In fact you're doing it right now. These words were never said, but thought. True I'm the one letting you read my thoughts by publishing my work on Blogger. But wouldn't that be the same thing as being around a telepathic mutant? If you knew someone could hear your thoughts, you would try to monitor your own thinking. I'm sending these words and allowing you to read them just as I would around someone like Emma. (Hopefully this would be the case, if you knew them and if they weren't evil)
When it comes to writing, this is what separates novels from movies. This is why the book is always better then the movie. With movies you are always lead to wonder what the character is thinking. Sometimes they do include thought into the narrative, but its never as in-depth as it would be within a novel. If books were like movies then we would have never known what Jacob Porter was thinking when he had such negative emotions toward his grandfather when his dad exposed his letters to him; in Ransom Riggs's novel Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children  But knowing his thoughts kept the book alive. This main fact is why people believe books are almost always better then the movies. Understanding the characters thoughts helps the reader empathize with the characters actions. And along the way you're also reading the thoughts of the author, and understanding what they would or want to do in those situations.
As for broadcasting thought, this is exactly what you might think. Flip the scenario. It's the things you type but not necessarily say. True you're not typing everything that comes to your mind, but it would be the same when you broadcast thoughts to individuals. In a case of being Emma Frost, every time you write, the ones who read it, they begin to know your thoughts and feelings.
It is true that some things, not being written properly, can become interpreted in different ways, such is the same in a short texting conversation, poetry or even song lyrics. But a novel which is written very well, will in turn express how you are feeling and will evoke emotion from the ones reading it with your true thoughts behind the matter, not for interpretation. (unless that's what you're writing for, which in turn is the same thing.)

Alter Perception
This ones a lot easier to understand. The word perception has three different definitions, but the main one to focus on for this article would be, a process of becoming aware of something through the senses. When you read you become empowered to understanding, to gain knowledge and change your realization through the senses you were born to have. Others written word can change the view you have on many different subjects regardless of how you felt about them when you began. My new favorite novel of this year would be Twisted by Andrew E. Kaufman I was surprised by what this novel left me with. I can never ever view ones with schizophrenia the same again. Possibly because my perception of them, wasn't the correct way to view them. In fact I never knew what they battled to begin with. My brother has a form of this as well. So, after reading this I was shocked. Although, I knew the protagonist was... well Spoilers so I don't honestly think I'll finish that train of thought. It's a really nice novel anyone who EVER reads this will never leave with the same perception. The same goes with Flowers for Algernon No one has been the same, or treated strangers the same since picking up this novel and flipping through its pages. If you are an avid book reader, (which if you are, I'm not quite sure why you'd be reading this.) Then it's safe to assume you have met a novel in your life time that has left you with new perceptions on things.

Alter Memory
When I'm writing about this I do not mean altering memory as in changing the old memories you have, but in a way I am saying exactly that. For me, (which rarely do I have friends to speak about this with) After I have read a novel, it always stays with me. Not the writing itself, but the scenes which I saw during my visit into this persons written world. Take this example and my word, Margaret Peterson Haddix's Among the Brave is about a boy named Luke who escapes a compound. During this book, he runs into the forest and sees a shed. Well this honestly, and a scene of him crawling through the air vents, are the only things I can remember. But for my altered memory? When I first read this book, really the only time I read this book, (and I do need to read it again,) I was only in the 7th grade, and just beginning to love LOVE being lost within a novel. Now though, every single time I am driving by a forest, I always look for the shed that I ran too. Then I quickly remember that never happened what are you thinking? But I still remember the struggle and the fight getting to the shed and hiding, even though it was never a thing. Same goes with so many other novels I can't count.

This blog, about becoming Emma Frost, that you are reading, is letting you believe, if only for a second you can become like her. Through the powers of writing. Yet I may be insane, but then again, so was Emma Frost in some moments of her life. I mean, she was evil of all things and wanted to murder all the X-Men, then fell in love with Scott but come on! She deserves her shot! And if reading could get us one step closer to understanding what others believe and think, to understand their feelings, emotions and how the human brain functions, then I believe it's worth it.
And don't forsake the skills you have in reading, when others wish to be able to read, at least try to be thankful for the knowledge you already have, and feed your brain with powerful writing! You may just be surprised with what your invested time leaves you with!
