The Attachment
The Attachment
The attachment to my characters from our novel is a tough subject. Some may not understand how authors feel on this subject. The feeling a reader gets when they become attached to a character through novels or television shows are that much more for the writer. Because each and every moment that character is in, is another battle going on in the authors mind. Another real formed emotion the writer must deal with every day. The new novel we're writing, is named The Institute of M.A.S.A. and it is so difficult for me to write. Each fight, and almost each emotion Amily has about her brother is so painstakingly real to me.I'm not about to get into that, because it's too personal. The emotions she feels is in a way something I feel, she relates to me because she is a part of me. It also explains why authors become so defensive over their own characters, and why they become so attached. It could also explain why authors could care less if you make fun of their characters, because they could care less if you made fun of them. Its a continues cycle.
It's because of these things that our Characters can form a different personality and take on a mind of their own. Two years ago when we started to write our first novel, (then it was just me D: ) I remember feeling weird about the entire thing. I wasn't quite sure how to mold my characters, how to give them 'life.' I had some help but nothing was enough because Zathena could not relate to me at the beginning. That's why when I wrote about her, I made her feel the way I would if ever faced with that situation. But then it started to become a problem. (Now I'm getting personal here.)
When I read about Zathena, or even think about her, I wish I could actually talk her through the situations she encountered, tell her everything would be fine. probably because I wish someone would do the same for me. Aruno relates to be because he reminds me... of some people. Chad reminds me of my own father. (duh) But I guess our readers won't find that out until the books released. Zilpher well, reminds me of Toby Lawhon because he was the inspiration behind that.
When I finalized Zathena and the Sky Pirates, I knew there was going to be errors, because I stayed up straight for four nights editing. It was horrible.
(off topic :) And with this new novel I know we'll at least have the time to edit and finalize the book in a much longer duration, which means there will still be errors, (There's not a single book (except one) with no errors, because the human language is always developing and moving forward, shortening or lengthening,) I could spend my entire life editing that book and it will never be perfect because I will always find something wrong with it. and I don't care. I love the mistakes for what they are. Yes we will still update the book, but only after we finish the series.
After finalizing the book, I became delirious. I honestly started to imagine things. We had gym on Monday morning and we had to run. Yes, that's right I ran after 4 nights of no sleep with the only imaginations entering my brain were the novel itself. yes, I did go insane. Josh can prove that one, I'm pretty sure I used him for a punching bag. eh, he was okay with it, only because he knew how I felt. During my sprint, I honestly thought I saw Orfeo bounding over the pavement after me. (I just imagined that and LOLed... bounding) After I stopped to catch my breath, my friends touch startled me. "Are you alright?"
"yea," I breathe, panting because I was trying to catch my breath.
"because it looked like you were trying to run from something." She joked.
"I thought I was?" I gasp because I honestly did. I thought my imaginations jumped out of my mind and were chasing me; Adult onset schizophrenia? I honestly hope not. Sometimes my mind does play tricks on me. Have slight feelings of depression? oh, at least Aruno loves you, you still have that family member, oh and Kazuhiko! idiot they don't exist. I think I might honestly be insane, just a touch.
Just as Doctor Who or Harry Potter might be real and be an attachment to most fans, the attachment amplifies when it comes to the writer.
